Canine osteoarthritis

What causes osteoarthritis?

Certain dogs are more likely to develop osteoarthritis (OA) than others. Old age, large size, and obesity are some of the more common contributing factors. Trauma or injury can also trigger OA, and some dogs are genetically predisposed to the disease. In addition, there are inherited developmental abnormalities of the bones and joints that can lead to OA. Dogs engaged in excessive physical activity are at increased risk of developing osteoarthritis as well.
